    Unhappy Normal Breakpoints Work!

    Hello Everyone!,

I am new to R.E forums. Actually I had a problem with a program (forgot

its name) since the normal breakpoints used in ntice(Sice for Win NT) to

serial fish dont work(GetWindowTextA, GetDlgItemTextA) so how do i go

about the target? Which break points should i use? Is there any other

method to serial fish ?Also i think that the target is packed can anyone

suggest me any good tool(with GUI if possible) to detect if the target is

    packed?

    Thankx in advance for viewing!
I promise that I have read the FAQ and tried to use the Search to answer my question.

As Above... (and Esther, you'd better read this too!)

Come on kid. Try to find out WHY the breakpoints are not hitting. Is it a software feature or your lack of knowledge of how breakpoints are set in all things NT?

Maybe it would really do good to you once in a while to use the search button and hit it with "breakpoints" minus the quotes. You should see TONS of stuff that tell you why breakpoints do not hit in NT based systems and what you should to to get them to hit.

You'll have to "learn" the knowledge. Not absorb it by osmosis. And what would you have done if this board had not existed? Searched Google? Try doing that too!

Esther, I owe you an apology for a remark made by me to you regarding newbies long ago. I guess they do get on the nerves after some time.

Part of the root problem is the tendency for many people to look for instant gratification, particularly when it might be achieved with little or no personal effort. Somehow the first response does not seem to be to resort to "self-help," but simply to avoid all personal effort and ask someone else to do the research for them and "instantly gratify" the desire, or self-perceived "need" for the answer RIGHT NOW.

This is essentially a failure of acceptance of personal responsibility. We are responsible for helping ourselves and seeking answers to our own questions. We have no right to expect the world to BRING everything WE want to our feet, so that we do not have to stir ourselves from our lack of effort.

Although such habits are rightly to be discouraged, the goal is to train the "proper" response of a resort to "self-help" and, only after that has failed, to seek guidance from others. We don't want, or need to kill off the lazy or poorly trained in the process. While it remains their own failing, it is also a symptom of the times in which we live and it is our duty, and often burden, to try to guide them back to the true path down which knowledge may be achieved, rather that a gratification urge fulfilled.

These are general comments, not necessarily appropriate for telophase, but if he actually did anything to try to help himself, he certainly failed to mention that fact, even though it is required by the FAQ. You did read the FAQ, did you not?

    Thumbs down Here's what i did :p

I had breakpoints set up on MessageBoxA, GetDlgItemTextA,GetWindowTextA

    dis-assembelled the prog using wdasm.

    Tried to dead-list it.

Tried searching the memory using softice's "s" instruction.

tried BPM on the locations but still failed.

tried using DialogBoxParam to check whether it uses its own box to show "bad guy" message.

Another other things that u can expect from a newbie. if so do let me know
I promise that I have read the FAQ and tried to use the Search to answer my question.

    READ MY LIPS:

    1. Go to the "Search" button at the top of the Forums and enter, without the quote marks "breakpoints." Read EVERYTHING you find.

    2. Second, SEARCH for "packers and identif*". Read EVERYTHING you find.

    3. THIRD, Read the Damn FAQ and you would already know what you should do, BEFORE you ask a question and you would also know what information you should provide WHEN you ask a question.

After you have done these three things, THEN come back and ask a question that explains what YOU have done to try to help yourself answer your question and where you are stuck. IS THIS CLEAR NOW???

    Regards,
    JMI
