    CrackZ Site Download

As I stated in my 11-20-01 post on the "General" board, I downloaded CrackZ' site two days before he closed it. I also stated that I didn't want to become a central clearing house of his files, but I have e-mailed certain files to members requesting location of specific files. The entire data base is approx. 213 KB, not really very large and I have it in a Teleport Pro down load, which means that it is offline browseable, as if it was his original site.

I've never actually attempted to zip or winrar compress a file or an entire directory before but have both programs on my disk. Usually I'm only uncompressing someone else's files. I'll give it a try.

I'm not sure if CrackZ would object to copies of his entire site being distributed by others. I believe that there still remains a complete copy of the site on Woodman's server, but I believe that CrackZ has requested that it not be made available through that source. If I don't hear anything from him, or Woodman, within a few days objecting to the distribution, I'll attempt to make it available in a zip file and maybe it can be uploaded to an ftp server somewhere for general distribution.

In the mean time, if there is a spefic file that you are looking for, I probably can send it by e-mail.

    Hi,
CrackZ request was to not have his entire site spread all over the internet.

I do believe that specific files would be ok for your own reference.

I'm sure that CrackZ will pop in and let you know his feelings, until then please dont spread his site.

    Peace, Woodmann

    CrackZ' Site Download

Since Woodman has been kind enough to host this site and keep all of us able to exchange information about reversing and such, I am more than happy to comply with his request. Unless CrackZ wishes to give his blessings to the concept, I will refrain from uploading or passing on copies of his entire site.

Since there appears to be no general objection to the sending of specific files from the site, I will continue to assist members with some specific requests, but I ask that anyone wanting a file that was on the site to do their own search for the file before taking the easiest route to make the request here. We don't learn anything about the art of searching if we don't try on our own and learning is what this Board is supposed to be about.

Again my thanks to Woodman for keeping this effort on the net.

    When fravia told me :
I'm shutting my site down, please close your mirror.

I answered him : Your site is too useful, and its essays belongs to the people that finally made them. You will not be able to
shut down all the earth's mirrors so do I.

I was ok to remove his name from the entire mirror, just to let his new site be correctly refered by search engines.

This time, we face a dilemna. I was always involved to free knowledge, and my opinion is that his site should be available to download, with his name removed if he wants to do so.

But he personally ask us not to make it available. So until he gives us his word, we still can't support to host a zipped copy of his site available for all.

    Post

    Hi guys,

Excuse some rants coming your way....
There is something that I dont understand about this community or actually the community that I feel a belonging to.
I always thought this community promotes knowledge and free learning. But then comes those actions by different ppl who decide to shutdown their sites/pages and disallow anybody from 'giving' it out to ppl. <-not being specific at all
I can honestly say that I have NO right what so ever to complain about such an action. It his/her work after all.
My complaint or actually my idea is to create an archive. This archive can hold a zipped version of the site that got shutdown.
Ofcourse after the approval of the owner. We should promote/incourage ppl to make such a backup of their site.

Now, look at CrackZs page and fravias before. If it wasnt for tsehp, the majority of this community would have lost a valuable archive of knowledge. But what about CrackZ site???
Cant we at least publicly archive the information/essays that were contained on his site? Perhaps some xtra important files as well ?

    well, what do you think?

    Hiya,

Just 2 things I want to add to this thread.

    1. The whole reason for closing my site to the public was precisely this - I don't want it public ever again. My site and this community is project I have finished with, a stage in my life that I am moving on from, regardless of all the free knowledge cries we have raging around here, that is my decision, my right, my <anything else you care to insert here> and I'd hope some of you would respect it.

    2. In the last week of my site I encouraged all those who I knew would like it, to download it, hi JMI ;-), if you were not fortunate enough to do so then there are people on this msgboard happy to send you the files (of that I'm sure). If Tsehp/Woodmann wish to facilitate this, just indicate so here and I'll u/l a final archive of my site to you so that you might help anyone who did not snaffle themselves a copy, if the RCE CD project is still alive I'll donate the final archive there too.

I'm sure many of you can see contradictions in what I've posted with points 1 & 2 but I'm hoping you can see what I'm trying to achieve here from my personal perspective.

    Regards

    CrackZ.

NB - My e-mail remains open if anyone would like to e-mail me directly wrt obtaining a copy of my site (it has a few extra fixes actually, since I just can't stop tinkering with it ;-) ).

    Question CrackZ' Site Download

I confess I'm more than a little confused by both Tsehp and CrackZ' responses (and honored to have such folks, and Woodmann and Morlac, responding to a thread I'm involved with).

Tsehp suggests that "Fravia's board" was closed and that he wanted to save the archives of those files, but they remain available from at least two other sites on the web, both with all the old materials and new submissions, but with a different focus. They still have almost the same front page as here. (They even contain the essays from Project 9 relating to cracking M$ targets that have been removed from this site (apparently) because of M$'s threats, so the point of saving the knowledge seems somewhat misplaced, although I understand the point that the new "Fravia" boards not being updated as "fravia", but as "Searchlore." And I'm sure that there are many now, like me, with more harddisk space than current skill, who are downloading full sites relating to these subjects for offline reading. (I actually have copies of both the "new" Fravia site and this one saved to disk and CD, and have been trying to download this board for more careful study of some of the threads. Damn vBulletin makes thousands of files, making that process much more difficult. )

I also agree that knowledge should be shared, but respect Crackz' desire that his "site" not become "Public", but am having trouble reconciling your points 1 & 2. Perhaps I might suggest a method that would permit both points to be accomplished, that being privacy of your "site", with distribution of your "knowledge and data."

Two things make the CrackZ site what it was (is). There is the "look and feel" of the site, with the web pages and the links to the various materials and comments contained from CrackZ. Second, there are the files and essays, many of which were contributed by others and were archived there. I have no idea whether the files on the various protections were all contributed by CrackZ or not, but most were not available anywhere else on the web.

It would be a relatively simply thing not to distribute CrackZ' "web pages, comments and links" and thus maintain his request for the end of the "site's" public life (although it remains in the "public domain" with those of us who followed his advise to download "all" of it just before he closed it.) Removal of the "linked" Index file, for example, or substituting the last one without the links, and his other "pages" would remove the "look and feel."

But, while maintaining CrackZ' wish that his "site" not be "public", it would still be relatively easy to "distribute", or make available, the essays and files themselves, without CrackZ' web pages and links. In other words, a "zipped" file could be made of the raw materials (with a message, if it is his wish, that stated that the files were "contributed to the reversing community by CrackZ", since the contribution deserves such credit).

As to my personal choice, I'd encourage CrackZ to give his permission for the distribution of at least those files and essays as a group. I'm not sure exactly where you stand from your response, and perhaps it reflects that you haven't reached a final decision on that aspect yet.

It does appear that you do not object to our sharing some "individual" files with members who might request them. If I've gotten this wrong, please advise and I'll refrain from that as well, until we hear from you further.

CrackZ, I would appreciate receiving any additional files you have that were not on the site when it closed. Most of your materials are beyond my current level, but I'm attempting to educate myself to a point where I can attempt some of the reversing addressed by you materials. I'll e-mail you with my address, if you are so inclined. Again thanks for your efforts.

Yes, I know that not making a local copy is to my disadvantage, but there wasnt really any warning that this was going to happen...so in the spirit of spreading knowledge CrackZ I would be really greatful to you if you could share a copy with me...thats all I was after...public or private site...there have been too many knowledge casualties in this comunity over the last two or so years...you know the sites that have gone...who's sites next...??? At least I still have a few *secure* VX knowledge sites to refer to.

Enough rambling, I'll send you (CrackZ) an email, and hope that you can help?

One thing that I forgot to mention in my previous post.
Its a problem for me and I think for others as well with a limited connection to the net.
Im on 56K modem. The connection is quite expensive for a jobless person like me. Around 30$ a month and not to mention that I have to pay for using the phone line.
For me this means grabbing as much info and then going offline to study the material at my pleasure.
Then I hear about the RCE CD project, I get excited and happy.
Finally, an archive that any reverse eng. would be proud to have.
I must admit that I heard about the RCE project from this thread.
And I support the project. If there is anything that I can do to help. Just let me know and Ill do the best I can.

CrackZ, I know that you were addressing the general ppl in your post, but I would like to say the following:
Yes its your project and your life. And I completely support/respect your desecion. Its something I went through and completly understand.
Im not trying to 'suck' to someone here. Im just being honest.
But please, JMI makes a good proposition in my opinion.

    my 2cents.
