    Assassin's Creed 2 DRM challenge

    hi all
i just found out that Assassin's Creed 2 have a new DRM types exept the obvious ones (CD-Protection):
1 - need online connection to play game
2 - save is on the online storage
3 - load the game from the online storage

i think that this type of analisys need to be public and i'm intending to buy this game just for the challenge of cracking it.
who ever want to share his knowledge about this protection you are more then wellcome to post your findings here..

    Hi LaBBa,

i think this is the "new" game publishers way to try to make it more hard to crack the so called offline games. Even if the game basically would not need an internet connection they force the player to have a working internet connection for saving/loading. in my opinion this is a very aggressive way. i will try to support companies which do not use techniques like this!

anyway an interesting project. will be interessint whether they implementet a simple protocal to transfer savegame data completelty after a defined amount of time or if they implemented a more complex communication protocol which allows to update smaller game states at any time.

"Assassins Cread" you said, right: Maybe i will buy the game as well

    - Reverse Enginnering can be everything, but sometimes it's more than nothing. Really rare moments but then they appear to last ages... -

make sure its assassins creed 2, not 1

as for the challenge of cracking it, i suspect you'll be bitterly disappointed.. its ubisoft homebrew crap, it'll be out soon so we can all play with it (i believe its out already in russia)

You could try to get your hands on the Settlers 7 beta.
The new launcher is part of the package and will be located in "Program Files\Ubisoft\Ubisoft Game Launcher" after the installation.
ubiorbitapi_r2.dll exports all the interesting functions and doesn't seem to be protected/obfuscated at all.
I promise that I have read the FAQ and tried to use the Search to answer my question.

Well that's for a cool cracking experience, skidrow cracked the exact same protection on Silent Hunter 5: Battle of the Atlantic.
That's just retarded. They could've at least made it somewhat hard. Now it truly only pisses of customers, and spoils the fun for us.

And it's actually only syncing the savegames it seems, which means you can just wank out the connect to ubisoft checks and voila. Really why didn't they actually hire someone with experience in the RE field.

This is really beyond belief for me, Starforce I could understand, yeah it's somewhat excessive and also pisses of customers, but heck it worked for a while. This is like selling something to someone and then start throwing shoes at them and saying asshole you would have stolen it if you didn't buy it from me.

yup, and same posts for assassins creed (think the one cited is about silent hunter 5) - both cracks seem incomplete (silent hunter 5 one is only 10 or so bytes, where the protection seems a little bit more 'deep' than the cracker(s) assumed it to be..

While the cracks may not be complete, it amazes me that companies go to such extreme lengths, just to keep pirates at bay.

Man, I know the companies notice that under their giant piles of money that there is a tiny hole draining it. I personally don't think it is worth what little bit of money you save for like the first 5-10 hours, 1-2 days, 1-2 weeks just to keep pirates from getting away with it. They continually hurt their customers, and it's just not worth.

I'm not saying I condone piracy, but they are defending the customer (in my opinion), I think all game companies just need to realize the fact that they will probably never win the battle. Give up now, and cut your loses.

On a side note, it's nice to see that we still have tons of RCErs out there .
I need to get back on to my machine, and start the cracking again.

There, I feel better about saying my part .
