    Stupid things part 3.

    Well now,

It has been a few weeks since I thought about stupid things BUT,
I have been pondering this one for a few days.

Where I live they use some form of salt on the roads when it snows/ices up.
This salt is in gigantic piles
It is left unprotected in all weather.

If it can melt snow and ice, why doesn't the pile melt when it rains ?

Perhaps I misunderstood the question, but the thing is, salt is used to melt the snow and ice because it lowers the freezing point of the water (that is the point at which the water turns into ice) so now you can have water with temperatures below 0C (32F).

Now what I didn't understood is why would the rain melt the salt?
I don't know if you meant that the rain should dissolve the salt... if that's the case, the reason it doesn't dissolve is that perhaps you have much more solute than solvent. I guess it would be the same thing if you would try to dissolve a glass full of salt with another glass of water.

Well, just my 2cents... Sorry for any misinterpretation.

    Regards,

A spam bot with a detailed reply ?

Oh eval, I think you are wrong on this one.
You can always prove me wrong .

The explanation about salt melting snow and ice seems somewhat reasonable.
Using the logic you came up with makes sense in that when it rains the temperature is above 32F. The type of salt they use most likely wont react until the temperature is below 32F.

Frozen water + road salt = melted snow and ice = wet road.
water + road salt = chunks of undissolved salt on the road.

    That was too easy .

    Still using salt over there?

We now use the CMA solution on major roads. It's expensive but reduces the overall maintenance costs, does not corrode undercarriage parts of your car and it's environment friendly.

Salt eats through the asphalt or concrete making tiny pores on the paved surface. With the spring time rains water accumulate under the gravel and you have hundreds of pits on the road surface.

    Howdy,

We do use some CMA but you are correct in that it is expensive.
The price of road salt has also increased twofold over last years price.
That could account for the fact that I have seen very little pre treatment of the major roads this year when last year they were treated 24 hours before a storm.

Any gimmick is worth whatever the market is willing to pay.
