View Full Version : I got a problem.......

As usual it's not something easy.

I got a Dell mini that is severely infected.
I have tried to format with Knoppix and she wont go.
I have tried gparted and she wont go.
Winxp says the same thing.

I have managed to delete the big partition but it has
a small 30 mb partition that refuses to play.

I think that is where the evil is hiding. DUH .

Since I can only run tools from a usb drive,
does anyone know of any nifty tools that can be
booted from a usb drive that might help me?

My searches have led me to many things that require
to much effort. Since we live in an age where everything
has already been done,
I cant seem to find a ready made answer.

What are my options besides throwing this thing
in the trash?

Haven't tried it myself but you can try Active@ Kill Disk. They offer a free suite that can create a bootable USB drive. It's a small download so worth trying. Good luck.

Well, if time doesn't matter you won't need anything but Knoppix (or any other Linux Live-CD). In case the harddisk refuses formatting, simply overwrite the beast completely with zeros. Depending on the disksize this might take some time.
As root:

dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda

/dev/hda is your harddisk. On your system may be called /dev/sda (or /dev/sdb if it is the second disk). Just check it before running dd.

Try Symantec Norton Bootable Recovery Tool and make the ISO bootable from an USB drive with unetbootin (unetbootin.sf.net)

If not, wipe the partition as Darkelf said. I'd just add a couple of parameters, like this:

Code:
dd if=/dev/random of=/dev/xxx bs=8b

(Change xxx for your hard drive nomenclature. It should start with sd since it's an SSD disk, I think.)

But don't throw it away, I currently don't have any computer on my own.

Succeed!

Thanks for the replies.

I went with killdisk because I didnt want to wait
24 hours for a wipe. As it was, killdisk is also a wipe
utility so it took 3 hours to wipe 39MB.

Well...........

I still cant remove the friggen partition.

Hard disk tools say there are I/O errors.
I'm not buying that because the thing was running,
albeit with a nasty infection, but it was running
none the less.

Thankfully UNetbootin will let me build anything I want.

Right now I am building a winxp live on usb.
Lets see how that works out.

if you will boot from usb/cd, then try to manually wipe partitions for example by WinHex.
if they are marked as bad sectors, then try to retest/repair bad sectors.

It's best to follow Darkelf's advise and wipe the whole disk with it's partitions using dd.

@Don Wooma

An addendum: if you got I/O errors while using dd, you would use dd_rescue instead.
It will happily ignore those.

Good luck.

Howdy,

dd'ing the whole disk as we speak.
dd_rescue will go next.

I have been reading a ton of stuff about
this problem and if this doesnt work, the drive is junk.

It seems Dell realized they made junk
and came out with the mini 10 to replace this piece 'o shit.

A used drive is $100 US which aint gonna happen.

Howdy,

I have tried different linux flavors with some
varying results. I managed to format the large
partition to ext2. The small partition with dell
utilities on it refuses all attempts.

I flashed the bios and eeprom and it now
starts up and finds the ethernet controller.

I'll try a few other things before it hits ebay for parts.

Just in case, did you set as master (for IDE) when you kill the partition? Some strange things might happen if its set on slave

Woody's in it for the challenge. He's trying to make the damn thing behave the way "he" want's it to behave. That's what the craft is all about. Wanting to accomplish something that the equipment/software doesn't want to let you easily accomplish.

Woody, just remember the first law of "mechanics." NEVER FORCE IT...JUST GET A BIGGER HAMMER!!! Sometimes, that, alone is a great stress reliever.

I'm not spending $100 for a $300 piece of shit.
Besides, I have a mini10 to play with.

I'm still gonna play with those tools and see what happens.
The owner has already told me to scrap it so
it will hit ebay eventually.
